Resolution:

I tracked the datastore that it was going to, and then logged into the vSphere Web Client, right-clicked on the datastore and hit upgrade to VMFS5 (the volume was previously at VMFS3). Now all is happy and no complaints.

Obviously this will impact vMotion capability to move to other hosts.
